As electric cars boom, locals fear Chinese battery plant will harm land in drought-stricken Hungary

Residents, environmentalists and opposition politicians in eastern Hungary are worried that a sprawling battery factory will exacerbate existing environmental problems and hit the country’s precious water supplies DEBRECEN, Hungary -- Just beyond the pastoral gardens and traditional homes of an eastern Hungarian village, a gigaproject of Chinese industry is taking shape. Bulldozers and excavators are already preparing the land for construction of a nearly 550-acre electric vehicle (EV) battery plant. The 7.3 billion euro ($7.9 billion) factory will be one of Hungary's largest-ever foreign investments, and the government hopes it will make the Central European country a global hub of lithium-ion battery manufacturing in an era where governments are increasingly seeking to limit greenhouse gas emissions by switching to electric cars. But residents, environmentalists and opposition politicians worry that the sprawling factory — built by China-based Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.

After Typhoon Mawar battered Guam, 'what used to be a jungle looks like toothpicks'

Many residents of Guam remain without power and utilities after Typhoon Mawar tore through the remote U.S. Pacific territory and ripped roofs off homes, flipped vehicles and shredded trees HAGATNA, Guam -- Many residents of Guam remained without power and utilities Thursday after Typhoon Mawar tore through the remote U.S. Pacific territory the night before and ripped roofs off homes, flipped vehicles and shredded trees. There were no immediate reports of deaths and injuries but the central and northern parts of the island received more than 2 feet (60 centimeters) of rain as the eyewall passed. The island's international airport flooded and the swirling typhoon churned up a storm surge and waves that crashed through coastal reefs and flooded homes. “We are waking up to a rather disturbing scene out there across Guam. We’re looking out our door and what used to be a jungle looks like toothpicks — it looks like a scene from the movie ‘Twister,’ with trees just thrashed apart,"

Newcastle officially confirmed their return to the Champions League with a goalless draw with 18th-placed Leicester on Monday night. The Magpies hit the woodwork three times while Nick Pope had to deny Timothy Castagne late on to secure qualification for the group stage of Europe's elite club com Pet ition for the first time since 2002/03. The point lifts Leicester above Leeds down at the bottom but they still sit in the relegation zone and only victory on the final day against West Ham will give them any hope of playing Premier League Football next season. Joelinton was a late dropout from Newcastle's starting XI due to injury as Elliot Anderson came in to play at a boisterous St James' Park. Bruno Guimaraes survived an early appeal for a red card after catching Boubakary Soumare high on the thigh. The Brazilian was booked rather than dismissed. Nottingham Forest's win over Arsenal on Saturday night crowned City as champions for the third successive season. It's their seventh Premier League title and their ninth top flight championship overall. The City players were greeted back onto the pitch after a brief pitch invasion and cheered onto the podium one by one before Ilkay Gundogan hoisted the trophy aloft to a rapturous Etihad attendance. With Champions League and FA Cup finals still to come, Pep Guardiola will have his squad focused on the tasks ahead. Turkish candidate Kilicdaroglu hardens stance before runoff against Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main challenger has adopted a more nationalist and hard-line stance before a presidential runoff ANKARA, Turkey -- President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main challenger in Turkey’s presidential race shifted gear and adopted a more nationalist and hard-line stance on Thursday, vowing to send back millions of refugees if he is elected and rejecting any possibility of negotiating for peace with Kurdish militants. Voters in Turkey will head back to the polls on May 28 for a runoff election after neither Erdogan nor his rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, won more than 50% of the votes in Sunday’s first round. The election will decide whether the country remains under the increasingly authoritarian president for a third decade, or can embark on a more democratic course that the opposition has promised to deliver. Erdogan had faced electoral headwinds because of the cost-of-living crisis and criticism over the government’s response to a devastating earthquake in Fe

Out of bailout spotlight, Greeks feeling recovery pains at election

Greeks will head to the polls on Sunday to elect a leader who will have more control over the country’s economy for the first time in over a decade ATHENS, Greece -- For the first time in more than a decade, Greeks will go to the polls Sunday to elect a leader no longer confined to steering the country’s economy from a back seat. Conservative Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is seeking a second term after a draconian regime of spending controls ordered by international bailout lenders ended last summer. The clean-cut Harvard graduate, as comfortable speaking in English as his native Greek, delivered unexpectedly high growth, a steep drop in unemployment and a country on the brink of returning to investment grade on the global bond market. Debts to the International Monetary Fund were paid off early. A landslide reelection for the 55-year-old Mitsotakis was once seen as a foregone conclusion. But his center-right New Democracy party could struggle to return to power as Greece’s voters
