Max Verstappen wins F1 United States GP: what is the record for most wins in a season?
Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen won the 2023 United States Grand Prix despite starting in sixth place on the grid at Circuit of the Americas. It was another dominant display in what has been a dominant season for the Dutchman, who had already clinched the Formula One Drivers’ Championship before the race in Austin, Texas.
How many races has Verstappen won in 2023?
Verstappen’s sealed the championship by winning at the Qatar Grand Prix on 8 October, his 14th triumph in 17 races from the start of the year, and he made it 15 out of 18 stateside with a hard-fought victory. The three-time champion overtook Mercedes’ George Russell on the very first corner and then methodically picked off those in front of him, eventually taking the lead from McLaren’s Lando Norris on lap 28.
Why was Hamilton disqualified from the United States GP?
Mercedes’ other contender, Lewis Hamilton, did run Verstappen close, finishing just over two seconds behind the Red Ball, but was undone by his team’s pit stop strategy. The seven-time champion, along with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who started on pole and finished sixth, was later disqualified from the race for having excessive wear on their rear skid blocks.
As a result, Norris was promoted to second, followed by Carlos Sainz Jr. of Ferrari and Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Sergio “Checo” Pérez.
When can Verstappen break the record for most wins in a Formula One season?
The victory was Verstappen’s 50th of his Formula One career and his 15th of the season, which equals the record he himself set in 2022. Given the Dutchman’s win rate so far (83.3%), it would be a major surprise if he failed to win any of the four races remaining and beat his own tally.
His next chance to do so will be at the Mexican Grand Prix on 29 October, followed by the São Paolo GP (5 November), the Las Vegas GP (18 November) and the Abu Dhabi GP (26 November).
Which other drivers have most race wins in a year?
As for drivers not named Max Verstappen, those with most race wins in a season are Michael Schumacher (with Ferrari in 2004) and Sebastian Vettel (with Red Bull in 2013), who both won 13 times. The German duo are also two of three men who have won 11 races in a year, with Hamilton having achieved that feat with Mercedes on four occasions (2014, 2018, 2019, 2020).
